R&D strategy for development of hydrogen for an infrastructure operator
Context & Objectives

Emerton was asked by an infrastructure operator to perform a benchmark on the R&Dactivities currently being conducted and planned in Europe with a focus on thecompatibility of the existing infrastructure with hydrogen, in terms of impactof H2 on pipelines, flow metering precision, normal function of network components, and gas separation technologies.

Outcome

Emerton identified ~30 European facilities with detailed analysis on their technicalcapabilities and financing structure.

This studysupported the client who was in the process of making an R&D investmentdecision.

Our approach

Step 1: Mapping of European test facilities involved in H2

- Identification of ~30 facilities relevant to the subject, out of the ~80 organizations in the initial scope

Step 2: Technical assessment of H2 research centers

- Technical analysis by each key subject of the study: pipelines, flow measurement, network components and gas separation

- Zoom on facilities with a dynamic loop

Step 3: Regulatory, financial and commercial analysis

- Consolidation of regulatory, financial and commercial analysis on R&D facilities
